While it appears that Homer Hickam is threatening to railroad Naomi’s internship (in 2018), he later clarified that he has no say on internships and that he took no offense to her tweets whatsoever. He was providing a friendly warning that he knows the people in charge of internships and that they’d likely take offense to her tweets.

Naomi ultimately lost her internship, apparently due to her friends attacking Homer on Twitter and including NASA as a hashtag, drawing the attention of NASA. Hickam and Naomi supposedly had a decent conversation afterwards where friendly apologies were exchanged. Homer stated that he also spoke to the people in charge of her internship to ensure that the interaction ultimately wouldn’t leave a black mark on her record.

Whether Naomi ever ended up working for NASA appears unknown.

Snopes has a pretty decent article covering the full story.

It’s ridiculous that this was an issue, yet the whiny little Apartheid-shithead can do a full on Hitler salute on national television and still get billions of tax money for NASA contracts. Fuck this timeline.

That seems like a really weird reference, was she talked about recently somewhere?

Edit: Like it seems they did a Britney on her…

The law at the time required full-blooded Indians, black adults, and children who were citizens of Indian Territory with significant property and money to be assigned “well-respected” white guardians.[15]Thus, as soon as Sarah began to receive this windfall, there was pressure to change her guardianship from her parents to a local white resident and family acquaintance named T.J. (or J.T.) Porter.

Nope, just a story that occupies a lot of brain space because of how disturbing it is to me. Especially this part:

As news of Rector’s wealth spread worldwide, she received requests for loans, money gifts, and marriage proposals, though she was only 11 years old. Due to her wealth, in 1913, the Oklahoma Legislature made an effort to have her declared an honorary white, allowing her the benefits of elevated social standing, such as riding in a first-class car on the trains.

I know they were different times, but this is dripping with so much racism that I could totally see us backsliding towards in a decade or so if some people wanted to try hard enough.

Telling everyone to shut the fuck up is one thing. I think having so remedial a set of communication skills that you, having a position as dispensible as “intern”, tell a person you don’t know to suck your dick and balls in public is quite another. You can say huff my whole anus when you’re a manager, and they need you around.

I hope in the future we do away with this nonsense. If it’s fine for one person to say and do then it’s fine for everyone.

The truth is any job can be done by someone else. We choose to value certain people more because of their position in an arbitrary hierarchy we made up and then are shocked when such a system creates outcomes we don’t like.

They weren’t like, earnestly telling everyone to shut the fuck up. You know that, right?

I think understanding context, and intention, are also communication skills. This is clearly just someone who is excited about their new job, expressing it in a way that they think is fun and/or funny. Who fucking cares, like seriously.

If I recall (don’t really have any interest in looking), they only reacted that way after that (at the time, seemingly random) old dude came in with a one word reply of “language” like he’s that person’s fucking parent or something. Maybe don’t condescend (to people you don’t even know) and speak to people like children?

I would have been annoyed as well. They were just trying to enjoy themselves while telling the world the news, and some fucking dude they didn’t even know comes in and says “language” like a fucking grade school teacher? Nah, go fuck yourself old man.

In a majority of professional settings, yes. We literally call them “curse” words for a reason. While the perception has softened over time they’re still generally considered vulgar, crass, and rude.

The fun part is there’s a difference between blasphemy, profanity, swearing, cursing and cussing! Learning the difference can save your professional career!

For example, most people would consider profanity to be completely mundane like invoking Jesus name in vain is profanity. Basically anything religious that doesn’t directly go against God, but is God adjacent things.

Saying God damn it would be blasphemy. Blasphemy is just blaspheming against God etc etc.

Cursing would not be saying fuck, but instead it would be saying God damn you or I hope you go hungry. Anything that you wish ill upon another.

Cussing would be saying fuck. This is what most people think of when they think of strong language or pardon my French.

Swearing would be things such as kiss my ass. This is anytime you say something that could be an oath or a promise, but you’re taking it in vain or with out the proper respect.

Generally speaking in Western society. Blasphemy profanity cursing and even most swearing are all completely acceptable, even in professional settings.

It’s cussing that tend to be the most problematic. Since the former three are basically only in religious context or or otherwise fine if you don’t include cussing. And unless you’re in a professional religious setting, no one really cares.

Really what it boils down to is don’t cuss learn to swear properly. It’s a lot more fun!

Imagine giving this much of a shit about the language other people use. I mean, it is obvious what type of person these classifications are when you start with “blasphemy.”

Always the same kind of people who want to police other people’s thoughts and language.

Depends, no professional setting I’ve ever worked in has blinked twice at people routinely swearing in the office / workshop.

I mean I still wouldn’t get on a zoom meeting with the CEO and tell him to get fucked, but that sort of language between coworkers is totally normal in my experience and not considered an issue at all. If someone calls me a dumb cunt at work, its probably because I was being a dumb cunt. No hard feelings, tomorrow’s a new day. Let’s try to be a good cunt tomorrow.

Yes, I do get it, but also I don’t see it as that big of a deal. But then again, I never really understood a lot of social conventions, and think many of them are pointless. Even if I still try to follow them when necessary because that’s what expected

But if someone swears like that, I really couldn’t care less, and I find it more funny than anything else (especially over-the-top exclamations like the tweets). I think we could use with softening up social conventions a bit

And also, people do curse at my work sometimes, and nobody really cares. But I live in Europe, so maybe it’s different

What’s sad about this is that the person in question (who is someone prolific at NASA, I don’t remember their exact role) did not push for the internship to get retracted and tried to get them to keep the offer, but they still ended up losing it.
