Honestly, just using this as an excuse to reiterate that J.K. is using her Harry Potter wealth to actively hurt trans people.

Her net worth is insane. She wrote one of the most popular and successful books series on the planet. This is what she’s doing instead of retirement. She’s like all the multi billionaires that work until death as opposed to fucking off to Italy or the south of france. Just worse.

My wife was a hard core Harry Potter fan. Like waited in the lines for the new book and completely derailed a family trip to get the final book fan. Her and her friends would do Harry Potter events all the time. We’d do Harry Potter bar crawls and all sorts of stuff. She was gonna have a sorting hat party for our child when she was old enough to start reading the Harry Potter books.

Then Rowling started doing all this garbage and all that died. She took down her old Harry Potter shelf and her and I stopped buying any merch whatsoever.

As a metalhead I’ve always had to separate art from the artist, but it’s one thing when the shithead creating stuff is a no name loser out in mountains that’s broke and has little influence. It’s another when they’re the third richest person in the UK and constantly using that wealth to spread hate.

It’s just so sad to watch a large part of my wife’s childhood just up and explode like that.

Count your blessings, my wife is still a Harry Potter fan and got our kids into it. It’s a huge ideological divide between us.

Oh God. I was a hardcore Harry Potter fan as a kid. Read all the books. I’m embarrassed to say that I spent far too much time in the “separate the artist from the art” camp, but I was just woefully uninformed as to what she was and is still doing with her money. In today’s political climate, it feels like she’s doing more than just picking on trans kids; she’s declaring who her ideological friends are. She’s broadcasting to the world what side she’s on. Fuck J.K. Rowling.

Imo you can still be a fan. Yes, the books have aged poorly and it’s good to be aware of the odd implications of some of the lore but the most important thing should be not to give her any money over it.

The problem is that even when you pirate the stuff you are maintaining its popularity. You’d have to pirate everything, never buy merch, talk about it, participate in anything related to it, never show the pirated media to any friends, etc. What is the likelihood of that?

We don’t give money to transphobes if we can avoid it.

Books, movies and games are very easy to avoid.

And… that is different from separating art from the artist.

              Hope that helps.

How? Definitions I can find are all similar to this:

Separating the art from the artist is a known concept defined as a manner to discern people’s appreciation of an artist’s work from their hate for the creator’s actions or opinions.

                Source

That is all. Consuming the art and appreciating it no matter who created it. This doesn’t mean it has to be purchased. The idea is simply that you don’t have to say, burn Rowling’s books that you have purchased once upon a time as mentioned in the opinion article. Or delete some artist’s music from your music player, put movie DVDs into microwave oven, delete all photos of a certain painting, etc…

How is the sentiment of separating the artist from the art different from not giving money to transphobes?

                  Literally every part of it.

                  Hope that helps.

I’ve seen many people at conventions associate with ghe Marauders fanfic than the actual harry potter books. Treating that as the ‘canon’ books, as to not give money to JK.

It’s said that everytime you pirate something, the creator sheds a single tear.

“Hey google how many teardrops can a person shed before dying of dehydration?”

I wouldn’t pirate it for shits and giggles since that still communicates interest in the property. If you have to have to engage with it for whatever reason, piracy is the most ethical way to do so of course.

        same,

however, if it comes out that it is an amazing show (doubt it) i might give it a shot, but only through piracy.
