I can’t speak for rural Moravia because I don’t live there but from what I heard they get really drunk on slivovitz (plum brandy). The whips are made of 8 (or thereabout, the form varies) willow or dogwood twigs. The way I make them, they are very flexible and don’t hurt at all and I don’t use the thick handle without the bows but I know people some people do. A good sign is that women in our village don’t run away: this means that they have realized they are more likely to hurt themselves in a chase.
