    Well…I mean … That’s fair.

If you woke me up a year ago to ask my opinion on the last three months, you’d have to spend an hour filling me in on details and then give me a few minutes to myself before I finally asked you to repeat what you wanted to ask me

You can definitely do it with prompt breaking - it could be as simple as phrasing the conversation at a hypothetical or as nuanced as convincing the llm you’re an AI expert testing the capabilities of the AI to reason using new information

But in all fairness, this timeline is beyond absurdity, the AIs reaction seems reasonable

It will if you define it properly - you have to scope the interaction properly though - the models are fine tuned to be the expert in the interaction and assist the user, they won’t take the users word as truth unless you break the dynamic or present part of the input as if it came from someone else

  • History doesn’t repeat, it rhymes. Global production has never been this specialized and interdependent

What does a company town look like with electronic access control and monitoring systems? What does a victory garden look like when the soil is polluted? What do you dress children in when plastic is the only common packaging?

This is unprecedented… No one knows how it’ll shake out. But historically, things got very bad

  • Know what divides a mid level engineer from a senior software engineer? The ability to reduce anything into a theoretically solvable problem and justified superstition

My exchanges often go “this should work, maybe rebuild?” And my response is always “let’s give it a try”… Because we’re two people who have seen a lot, have been burnt a lot… And 2/5 of the time, especially when we’re both scratching our heads and insisting this should work, it just does after our rituals

Junior software engineers understand the computer does exactly what you tell it. Software engineers understand computers do what you tell them… Except when they don’t for no comprehensible reason. Senior software engineers understand the computer requires the sacrifice of an unbloodied goat on Tuesdays with an odd date

  • Hmm… Well if you want to learn how to build a car you could kidnap an auto engineer, or you could find a really simple car and rip it apart to get to its delicious secrets

At least that’s what I’d do, I’m an engineer, not a mathematician. If you understand what they’re trying to do and you can see how they did it, you can play with the pieces until you understand. And that way, you can learn things they never knew when they built it

  • I wanted to please. I suppressed my own needs, because I so badly didn’t want to be the problem. Harsh words were just as bad as a belt to me, so when I got the belt (unfairly, because their day was worse not because I was) I learned none of it was about me. So very quickly, I resented all of it

And now, suddenly as an adult I’ve again become the fuck up to them. I never asked for anything - I take what’s given, I open up when I’m pressed, but I just live.

And still, they treat me as a failure. I made six figures before I was 25 - which was my stupid goal. I wanted to die. Now and I make a fraction of that to work a few hours a week. Doing something that matters. I don’t want a partner, because I don’t want to be tempted to bring a child into this world.

Nothing will ever be good enough, because I don’t share their values. It sucks because I had a panic attack the last couple times my parents called me… They always increase my stress with made up fears

  • For training (and I assume you mean finetuning, actual training from scratch is crazy) you basically gotta pick a method, pick a framework to do your method (or read a white paper and do some crazy math to do it yourself), and then you gotta clean up your inputs

There’s three main branches of approach from how I see it - you take a model and set of training data and make the model better fit the new training data, you take two or more models and combine them, or you take one model to create another model (by using one to train the other, using one model to shrink it, or using one model to upscale it)

I haven’t done any of this yet, but when I browse through hugging face you occasionally see the config/manifest they used to create one model from another with whatever library they used. I can keep an eye out for some examples for you if you like

Granted, this stuff is all just theory to me… I understand it conceptually, but I’ve mostly just used models so far

Oh sure… But basically you’re burning the boats. Everyone you know is dead, now you either integrate or die. There’s no going back, only forward

I’m not saying it would be seamless or wouldn’t cause issues, but humans naturally readjust to the people around them. Assuming they got some support integrating, their values and habits would quickly move towards the average. And the average for us is a huge range depending on culture, subculture, and even online microcultures
