Linux@lemmy.ml•rmlint: Extremely fast tool to remove duplicates and other lint from your filesystem
20·4 months agoI haven’t tried fclones, but rmlint is extremely safe. It only creates a json file and a remove script file, that you can review and edit before running.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Massive data backup question: What Linux software do you folks recommend for helping sort out and organize terabytes of files and remove duplicates?
1·8 months agoI have no idea what your setup is so you’ll need to do your own research on rsync.

6·8 months agoNightly rsync job in crontab works well enough, if its an external hard drive.
If you’re going over a network, syncthing.
I don’t see much point in making GUI apps for desktop nowadays, especially since desktop usage is in decline compared to smartphones. If you still want to, I’d go with iced, which is in rust, and well designed.
I’d recommend learning either android jetpack-compose, or iOS app dev.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Maybe Lemmy can forcibly invent a new term for "ricing". (Good faith pls)
0·1 year agoAn stranger on the internet just gave you license to say a historically racist term, how convenient for you. Next they’ll be some /r/asablackman posters saying its okay for you to use the n-word, because it doesn’t bother them.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Maybe Lemmy can forcibly invent a new term for "ricing". (Good faith pls)
0·1 year agoI removed this because it has nothing to do with linux specifically, and as expected, it brought out a lot of people defending the use of this historically racist term, and /asablackman’ing it.
I’ve reinstated it and removed the offending comments for now.
Also I don’t know why this needs a discussion at all. There’s hundreds of words in english for something that looks good, and you can be more specific about it : snazzy, sleek, cool, streamlined, nifty, retro

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which Linux tool or command is surprisingly simple, powerful, and yet underrated?"
2·1 year agoA few that I use every day:
- Fish shell
- Starship.rs
- Broot (a brilliant filesystem navigator)
- Helix editor (My favorite editor / IDE, truly the successor to vim IMO)
- Topgrade (updates everything)

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which communication protocol or open standard in software do you wish was more common or used more?
1·2 years agoMarkdown. Its only in tech-spaces that its preferred, but it should be used everywhere. You can even write full books and academic papers in markdown (maybe with only a few extensions like latex / mathjax).
Instead, in a lot of fields, people are passing around variants of microsoft word documents with weird formatting and no standardization around headings, quotes, and comments.

Thanks, just tried this out and it works well.
