I firmly believe that the gene for “wants to do crazy shit” and the gene for “has mad skills” will converge given enough time.
I have to do a double-take every time I try to go on a boring, run of the mill down escalator. (I’m perfectly fine going up.) It’s like I’m waiting for vertigo that never quite comes, just threatens.
I feel that way in some sports stadiums. Like… I can intellectually recognize that hundreds of thousands of people use these stairs without incident every year. But it does not feel that way in the moment.
It takes some time to be comfortable enough to break the fart barrier.
I legit farted as I was opening this post.

There’s a buffet place my spouse’s friends were all gaga over. It was a bit of a drive so it took me a few years to actually agree to go. It was like $25 or $30 a person (but free if it’s your birthday!) 15 years ago, so it’s not like it was cheap. The first thing that struck me is how absolutely cavernous the place was. Like a Walmart filled with tables and food islands. Signs saying where to find certain types of food. That kind of thing.
I might have eaten $10 worth of food. And I have been known to pig out from time to time. But between the mediocre at best food and the “atmosphere”… yeah I had no plans on sticking around to try and get my money’s worth.
I won’t get to retire at all, so that means I’m fine, right?
…oh.
Reality has a doom bias.
The news for insects is not entirely bad, emerald ash borers are finding the ability to survive in areas that were formerly too cold for them. This allows them to kill more trees turning them into kindling for lightning strikes and other fire starting events.
Had me in the first half, not gonna lie.
