You’re probably correct, but the possibility of federation does provide a safety valve. Any step in the wrong direction taken by BlueSky only makes it more likely someone will set up a new node.
BlackSky is heading full speed that way. A lot of users would like their own space regardless. The money doesn’t line up right now, but being able to port our information out means that that switch will flip sometime soon.

I’ve been in IT since DOS 3.1 and one of the most annoying things is how installation used to be about choosing your settings and customizing your install. Now it’s just how much information you’re willing to give Microsoft, and which of its other products you’ll sign up for.

Honestly, if you had asked me 10 minutes ago “Is MacOS based on Linux?” I would have gotten it wrong. But if you asked “Is MacOS based on UNIX or Linux?” I would have gotten it right.
